BODY IMAGE COACHING
Congratulations on taking your first step towards food freedom! My name is Casey Urban and I am an EDIT level II Eating Disorder Coach certified by Dr. Dorie McCubbrey. I know from my experience with overcoming bulimia that this work can seem impossible at times…but I am highly confident that you CAN recover. Here is an outline on what working with me as an Eating Disorder/Body Image coach will look like. I ask that you commit to at least three months with me as it takes time for your brain to adapt to this new empowered way of thinking and feeling.
QUESTIONNAIRE
Each client begins by filling out a general questionnaire about their body image, eating habits, exercise habits, etc. I know this part can be extremely scary! However, the more honest you are able to be with yourself, and eventually me, the faster you will recover.
RECOVERY PLAN
After going over your answers from the questionnaire, I will spend my first session with you creating a personal recovery plan. This plan may be more talk therapy focussed or it may be more hands on. For example, you may be working on being able to go out to eat without fear. Our following sessions may include going out to eat and discussing the thoughts and feelings that arise. Coaching while eating can also be done in the comfort of your own home, virtually, or in my office. This plan will most likely change over time as you strengthen your healing.
HOMEWORK
After our first session together you will have some homework which may include reading, worksheets, journaling, taking a meditation yoga class with me, or even an “artist’s date”. Each home work assignment is carefully chosen to build a custom tailored plan which best fits your needs and recovery goals.
DEFINING YOUR GOAL
After our first session together we will have narrowed down an obtainable goal. Your goal could be having more confidence in your body after having a baby, during pregnancy, recovering from a bulimia relapse, or losing fear around sugar.
DO THE WORK!
Your work will be specific to your goal. It could entail me accompanying you to the grocery store for moral support as well as to process difficult feelings that come up, weekly therapy sessions, practicing mindful movement, meditation, breath work, talking through meals together, diet culture education, help finding other eating disorder professionals, identifying keys from Health at Every Size, family of origin work, energy work, yoga, or a combination of all of these tools.
TOOLS
Each session we will work on solidifying a tool we have learned from the homework and we will work on learning a new tool to aid in your body image or eating disorder recovery. For example, maybe the last session you did a work sheet that helped you to identify the eating disordered voice in your head. During our session we will work on ways you can talk back to that voice that may not make it go away right away, but you will learn to quiet it down so you can continue to go about your day with more confidence and ease.
FIND YOUR COMMUNITY
Once you’ve built a strong foundation for your recovery, the key to maintaining that recovery is finding a community of people who are going through the same sh*t! You can’t just quit doing the work once you’re “recovered” (I used quotes here because I feel like we are always growing in our recovery ;-), you have to continuously strengthen those neural pathways you have worked so hard to build. One of the best ways to do this is to surround yourself with people who are also in recovery.
ONLINE, IN PERSON, OR ON THE PHONE
This community could be online, in person, or over the phone. It could be one of my donation based weekly video coaching sessions, a local support group, or an active Facebook group. The only rule: it needs to be loving and supportive! Finding your people will not only help maintain your recovery, it will help you grow to go beyond your comfort zone and maybe even be strong enough to help someone else one day.
